BOSS has recently announced the launch of a next generation distortion guitar pedal, the DA-2 Adaptive Distortion.

It has just been presented at the NAMM Show 2013 at Anaheim, California, and BOSS describes it with the slogan “Perfect Distortion Tones in Every Register“, because they affirm that delivers ideal distortion tones wherever you play on the guitar neck thanks to Roland’s innovative Multi-Dimensional Processing (MDP) technology.

Its main characteristics are:

  • next-generation BOSS guitar effect compact pedal realized with proprietary Multi-Dimensional Processing (MDP) technology and custom Digital Signal Processor (DSP)
  • applies a distortion that adapts to create the ideal sound in every register
  • high-clarity sound, even when playing two or more notes at the same time
  • ultra responsive to playing dynamics and volume changes
  • intuitive operation similar to standard distortion pedals
  • very low noise even with high-gain

Its secret is the Multi-Dimensional Processing (MDP) technology

Roland’s innovative Multi-Dimensional Processing (MDP) technology analyzes audio signals in many dimensions and applies ideal effects to each. By giving different dynamic changes relative to the input signal in real-time, MDP can create bold, all-new sounds with a previously unattainable range of expression.

The result is to obtain the ideal distortion across the guitar’s entire range, because unlike standard distortion pedals that process the entire signal with one effect, the BOSS DA-2 employs multiple distortion processors to seamlessly adapt the sound in real time and create the ideal tone for every register. As a result, the DA-2 delivers a rich, musical distortion that plays well all over the neck, from tight, edgy low-string tones to fat, smooth highs for lead playing. Thanks to MDP technology, the DA-2’s distortion is dramatically responsive to the playing dynamics, and every note is heard with clarity and definition.

Musician Land’s opinion

Premising that for the moment we have only watched the demo videos above, our opinion at Musician Land is that this guitar distortion pedal is very interesting for solos and lead tones generally. Moreover its clarity is appreciable playing chords made of 4 or more strings. We have some doubts about power chords played on the lower chords, our impression is that they don’t seem to be very powerful.

We reserve to try it live as soon as possible, and then express a more accurate judgment.
